Orlando might have some Magic left for more Finals appearances

The general consensus among fans and the media is that this year's NBA Finals are just a gap filler. That the LeBron James Dynasty or the James Vs Kobe Era has merely been delayed a year. The Magic in this sense are being humoured. The team has not been challenged to win the championship, but rather to one up their 1995 team and win one game, a mission it has accomplished.

When the Lakers are crowned champions (and it is a when rather than an if) a lot of fans and reporters will feel a sense of relief and an urge to wave the Magic good bye. Nike and Vitamin Water might even re-employ their marketing directors and allow them to brainstorm a few new Kobe Vs. LeBron adverts for next season.

I hate to break bad news. Who wants to be the one to tell kids Santa is not real? But someone has to do it. The Magic might be around for a long time. LeBron's path to the Finals is not a certainty anymore. Besides Boston he now faces another NBA Organisation with a front office that knows what it is doing.

The Orlando Magic are not like other NBA Organisations. They are not the Hornets or the Clippers. Their goal has always been to build up enough cap space to sign star quality players. The Mission since 1995 has been to get back to the big stage.

Let us rewind back to the year 2000. The Magic have just completed the mother of all overachieving season. Doc Rivers leads a team full off role players (Darrell Armstrong, Chucky Atkins, John Amaechi, Ben Wallace) and misfits to a 41-41 season and wins himself the coach of the year award. They are not merely an over-achieving team though. They are an over-achieving team with cap space. Enough cap space to sign two legitimate superstars.

Their vision: sign Grant Hill and Tim Duncan. No one knew at the time that Grant Hill's days as the best small forward in the game were numbered. The equation was simple enough. Combining their over-achieving roster with the team orientated superstar tandem of Hill and Duncan, and you would be left with an inside outside game to rival Kobe, Shaq and the Lakers.

Destiny however has never been kind to the Magic. The Admiral, David Robinson, tracked down Tim Duncan, convinced him that he still had a few years of solid basketball left in his body and Tim Duncan ended up staying with the Spurs, winning one championship after another.

The Magic found a good enough replacement. They singed Vince Carter's little cousin, Tracy McGrady a signing actually worth applauding since he blossomed into a superstar. Unfortunately for the Magic however Grant Hill's ankle did not fancy entertaining Magic Fans, and so they ended up having one frustrating 'what could have been season' after the next.

What does this little history lesson say about the Magic though? They are a team with vision. They try. Instead of letting Big Name players go willingly they try to sign them. Which is what has lead them back to the top.

While Cleveland GM Danny Ferry was desperately trying to show LeBron how serious the Cavs are about winning, by signing once upon a time good NBA players who's names fans will recognise (Ben Wallace, Wally Szerbiak, Joe Smith, Delonte West), the Magic have actually been signing and trading players with a plan in mind. One shudders to think what kind of supporting cast Dwight Howard would be surrounded by if he were in LeBron's place.

Lucky for Dwight his GM knows what he is doing. Since Howard was drafted by the Magic he has steadily seen players replaced by ones more suited to complement his game. Shooters to open the middle up for him. To help create space and allow him more room to utilise his rather limited array of offensive moves. Rule #1 of helping your team make a deep playoff run: keep your superstar big man happy, even if his strengths are rather on the defensive end than on offence.

The Magic have done more though than just surrounding their centre with shooters. By adding Rashard Lewis and Hido Turkoglu they have implemented two miss-match nightmares into their offensive arsenal. Both player are tall and have three point ranges.

Three great players by themselves are still not enough to get you to the NBA Finals though. And this is where the Magic yet again have shown a great nose for seeking out and signing talented role players. Each of the following players from the team's roster is very capable and knows his role on the court: Rafer Alston, Mickael Pietrus, rookie Courtney Lee, Anthony Johnson, Tony Battie and of course the polish hammer, Marcin Gortat.

To compliment the bench you have Tyronn Lue, mostly wearing a suite these days, but still, he has been there and seen it all. I would not go as far as tool call him a leader, but as he has won two championships on a team coached by Phil Jackson I'm sure he is capable of some valuable input from time to time. Some players can give you more than just solid minutes on the court.

Of course the missing link in these playoffs is Jameer Nelson. I'm not going to go down the lines of what could have been had he been healthy and in his All-Star form, but Magic Fans have to feel confident about his game being added into the mix again next season.

So before you shake your head in disbelieve, claiming this is the last we are going to see of the magic for at least another 15 years, consider the following.

Dwight Howard is still not a finished product. He knows he has a lot of room for improvement. And when you think how his defence has improved over the last few years, going from an apparently 'weak' defender to Defensive Player of the year, you have to believe he can at least make some progress on offence. The knowledge that he is already capable of getting 20 points a night must be scary for other NBA Teams. Hakeem Olajuwon or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar he will never be. As has been mentioned a lot these last few weeks he has not got the soft touch that both these players possessed. But will he be able to learn at least three solid post moves? The answer to that question has to be yes. And adding three post moves to his game could take him to a whole new level.

I am a Celtics fan, so it pains me to say this, but the Celtics are facing more un-certainty this off-season than the Magic. While Orlando can focus on improving their roster the Celtics have to decide which of their players they want to re-sign, and how much Kevin Garnett has left in the tank after that knee injury. The Lakers are also a team with question marks. Can they re-sign both Lamar Odom and Trevor Ariza? And if they are forced to sign only one, which one will it be? The Spurs are aging, and generally there is no other team out there at the moment that has as much going for it as the Magic do. Even the Cavs can't ask LeBron to do much more for them, and as long as Ferry is the GM in town there will be a long wait for re-enforcements.

The Magic have been bad the last decade not through bad singings, but through simple bad luck. Luck can change, whereas the ability to consistently evaluate players, and add solid components to the team won't. Who knows? The Magic might be able to sign a few solid veterans at a bargain price this off-season thanks to the prospect of another deep playoff run.

All this therefore leads to the following conclusion: regardless of the outcome of tonight's game, there is a strong possibility that the Magic will be back again this time next year!

The question has been on the mind of a lot of NBA fans for a while now. Why do the Cleveland Cavaliers struggle to sign top free agents? After all, contending teams usually do not have any problems to pick up talented veterans looking for a title. Look at the LA Lakers signing Ron Artest for instance.

If given a choice, Minnesota would not have been the preferred destination of Ricky and the Rubios. Rubio's mother does not like the cold weather. Ricky, also confessed, he would like to play somewhere warm. This prompted some awkwardness on draft night. When asked if he was happy to have been drafted by the Timberwolves, Ricky sidestepped by claiming he was happy to be in the NBA. When asked if he might stay in Europe for a few more years he claimed it was something he would have to look into with his agent. My guess is that all of a sudden Ricky won't be wanting that buyout from Joventut de Badalona so badly.

Now don't get me wrong. In a pure basketball sense this trade is probably a very bad idea. I predicted weeks ago that Danny Ferry would attempt a move like this. As soon as Orlando dispatched Cleveland from the playoffs is was clear that he was going try something drastic. How many people can honestly claim that they do not care about their reputation? My guess is there are a few individuals out there who honest to god do not care what people think about them, but they are probably a very small minority. I would also dare say that for most star athletes their reputation and legacy are almost as valuable as winning awards and championships. Some would claim that both winning championships and building a legacy go hand in hand. I'm afraid though this is not the case. Some players who have never won a championship (Barkley, Malone, Iverson...) have left greater legacies than those who have.
